Whale Refuses to Leave Friend Caught in Net

Yeah for happy endings!

Teenage Conservationist

Last week, a very lucky group of whale watchers aboard the Pirate’s Cove Whale Watch vessel witnessed off the coast of Long Island what can only be described as heartwarming.  Foggy, a whale who frequents the area, was entangled in a fishing line.  The rope was “wrapped around her head and across her blowholes…dragging a mass of old lobster traps beneath her.”  Foggy was breathing, but unable to swim.

The stranded whale was not alone, however.  Throughout the ordeal she was kept company by another whale, named Grommet.

The Whale Disentanglement Crew was called and went to work immediately.

With Foggy finally freed, Grommet performed a “celebratory breach.”  The two whales then went on their way, swimming side by side.
